EQM recently re-engineered a system for a very happy client that had been struggling with getting accurate alignment from a hydraulically operated system designed to index trays.
When we were asked to get involved the key part of the brief was around increasing the indexing accuracy, so we decided to look at the problem a little bit differently and suggested moving to an electric solution instead of sticking with the more traditional hydraulic process.
When we looked at the alternative of using electric motors with variables speed drives we needed to make sure the equipment supplied could handle the process cycle, which started and stopped 10 times a minute.
A STM worm gearbox combined with a pre-stage helical gearbox created a high ratio-low output speed drive with very little backlash. The hollow output shaft of the worm gearbox was mounted directly to the drive disc with special attention given to the shaft key fit.
The motor and gearbox was combined with a variable speed controller to get the optimum production speed.
The new system has achieved the required accuracy and reliability taking away the daily issues that limited the ability to reach production targets.
An EQM innovative solution like this not only increases productivity but relieves production personnel from the frustration of working with equipment that doesn’t perform.
